National Geo-graphics 에 실린 사진 찍을 때의 요령


Bob Krist (“Danish Light,” July/August 1998)

- Pay attention to the quality of light and not just the subject.
  좋은 빛을 찍는 겁니다. 좋은 대상물이 아니예요.

- Shoot in warm light, around dawn or dusk.
  새벽녁과 황혼 무렵에, 부드러운 빛 아래서 찍으세요.

- Always take a look at the edges of the view field.
  언제나 시각의 가장자리(끝)를 주목하세요.

- Shoot plenty of film.
  많이 찍으세요.

- Include a dominant element in the image.
  사진에 중심이 될만한 뭔가를 포함시키세요.

- Always carry a polarizing filter and tripod with you.
  PL필터와 삼각대를 챙기세요.




Gail Mooney (“America’s Hometown,” July/August 1998)

- Be an observer. Be patient and watch life as it happens then be ready to capture
  the right moments as they present themselves.
  관찰자가 되세요.  인내심을 가지고 삶을 지켜보다가 그들의 그 순간을 잡아낼 준비를 하세요.

- Don’t bog yourself down with all the latest gadgets. The real art is being able to communicate and
  to understand what the message is.
  최신 장비에 목매지 마세요. 진정한 예술은 메시지가 무엇인지 교감하고 이해하는데서 시작됩니다.

- A lot of amateurs make the same mistakes: not thinking about what they’re shooting;
  not considering the light; staying on the outside and not getting in where the action is;
  using a flash in a big interior where it won’t do any good.
많은 아마추어들은 같은 실수를 합니다 :
자신들이 무엇을 찍는가를 생각하지 않습니다.
빛에 대해 생각하지 않습니다.
피사체에서 너무 멀리 떨어져서 동화되지 않습니다.
넓은 공간에서 쓸모없는 플래시를 사용합니다.

- Never leave home without lots of extra batteries, a small flashlight, a compass, a magnifier,
  and a weather radio.
풍경사진을 찍으러 나설때는 여분의 배터리, 작은 손전등, 컴퍼스,
쌍안경, 날씨를 알려줄 라디오를 꼭 챙기세요.




Jim Richardson (“Sojourn on a Southern Highway,” November/December 1998)

- Shoot more pictures and throw away the bad ones. You’ll try more things: angles, exposures,
  and so on. The one way to get the photo right is to try lots of different approaches.
많이 찍고 좋은것을 골라 내세요. 각도, 노출 등등을 바꿔가며
여러번 찍으세요.
좋은 사진을 을 찍는 한 방법은 여러 접근방법을 통해 많이 찍는 것입니다.

- The human eye sees differently than a camera, so try to imagine how that image will look in
  a photograph.
사람의 눈은 카메라처럼 많은 차이를 볼 수 없습니다. 그러니 사진으로 어떻게 찍힐지를 상상해 보세요.

- Don’t just point the camera at the scene. Try to create a sense of depth and put things  in the image for scale.
장면의 구도만을 보지 말고, 스케일에 따라 창조적으로 심도를 조절해서 사물들을 집어넣어 보세요.

- Get up early and stay out late.
  일찍 나가서 늦게 들어오세요.

- Force yourself to “think little” and to “think big” by doing close-ups and long shots.
  You’ll gain a lot in the process of looking for details and grand-scale images.
접사를 찍을땐 작게 생각하고 풍경을 찍을땐 크게 생각하세요.
세밀한 것과 큰 스케일에서 많은 것을 알아낼 수 있습니다.

- Try carrying a right-angle viewfinder and put the camera on the ground or up high
  on a ledge and experiment.
  right-angle 뷰파인더를 써서 사진기의 보는 눈높이를 바꿔보세요.

- Meet the people you are going to photograph and establish a rapport before you begin shooting.
사진찍는 사람과 먼저 만나서 친해지세요.

- Use wide-angle lenses for close-ups, because it’s easier to create a sense of perspective.
  다가가서 찍을 때는 더 광각의 렌즈를 쓰세요. 원근감을 만들기가 더 쉽습니다.

- Carry a compact folding reflector to illuminate objects in the foreground.
  접는 반사판을 가지고 대상물에 앞에 낮은 곳에 두면 빛이 더 삽니다.

- When you are traveling, go to a souvenir shop and pick up a bunch of postcards for the place
  you’re visiting. It will let you see how others see each place so you can try to approach it more  
  creatively. Invariably, you will also find something that you didn’t know was there!
  여행에서는 관강상품 가게에서 그 지방의 엽서들을 보면 다른 이들이 보는 방법을 볼 수 있고
  당신은 더 창조적인 사진을 위한 다른 방법을 찾을 겁니다.
  그리고 반드시 그 지방에 있는지 몰랐던 새로운 장소나 볼거리를 찾을 겁니다.





Mark Thiessen (“Garden of Dreams,” January/February 1998)

- Try to get close enough to your subject to capture the important details.
사물에 더 가까이 다가가서 중요한 디테일을 잡아 내세요.

- Experiment with different types of film in different lighting conditions. For example,
  try using tungsten film outdoors, perhaps using a fill-flash with a daylight-to-tungsten gel  taped over the head.
여러가지 필름으로 여러가지 상황에서 찍어 보세요.

- Try using a fanny pack rather than a camera bag. It is not only lighter but safer while traveling  in foreign countries.
허리에 차는 팩을 사용해 보세요. 가볍고 여행지에서 더 안전합니다.

- Take a tripod, which allows you to use slower speeds and longer lenses during twilight.
  삼각대 꼭 챙기세요.



Bill Luster (“Brown County,” July/August 1997)


- Be as basic as you can in your equipment. Try to use just a camera, a couple of lenses, and not much  
  more. It keeps you thinking about what you’re shooting.
  가볍게 꾸려서 다니세요. 카메라 한대와 렌즈 두개, 그리고 약간의 보조장비만 가지고 다녀 보세요. 당신이 찍고 있는것에 좀더 집중하게 됩니다.

- Try to include people in every picture you shoot.
사진에 사람이 들어가야 재미있습니다.

- Make sure you’ve got film in the camera, set the ISO dial, and don’t shoot into the sun.
항상 카메라엔 필름을 넣어 두고, ISO 다이얼을 맞춰 두세요. 그리고 해를 직접 찍지 마세요.

- When shooting horses, putting pebbles in an empty film canister and shaking it really gets
  the animals’ attention. They think it’s food so they respond to it.
  말들을 찍을때는 작은 자갈 몇개를 빈 필름통에 넣어서 흔들어 보세요. 말들은 그것이 먹이인줄 알고 관심을 가질 겁니다.

- Always have a sturdy tripod handy and never leave home without duct tape in your camera bag.
  Tape around the camera to keep out dust and water. You can also writes notes on the tape
  to organize caption information at the end of each day.
항상 튼튼한 삼각대를 휴대하시고 종이 테이프를 가방에 챙기세요. 종이 테이프로 카메라를 감아 물과 먼지로부터 보호하고, 또한 테이프 위에 간단히 메모를 해서 그날의 촬영을 마치고 참고할 수가 있습니다.
